History of Barnstaple Concert Band

Barnstaple Concert Band has a long and varied history pre-dating 1900 and is believed to have been associated with the Royal North Devon Yeomanry Band.

After the First World War, it reformed under the name of the Old Comrades Band, eventually becoming the Barnstaple Town Military Band. The Band continued until the outbreak of the Second World War and at the end hostilities in 1945, a group of the original members reformed the band under the name of the British Legion and Barnstaple Town Band. In the 1980s,the name was shortened to the Barnstaple Concert Band.

Its tradition of supporting Barnstaple Town Council and the Royal British Legion in their civil duties and parades continues unbroken to the present day, along with its support of local communities and charities. The Band structure, instrumentation and classification have remained unchanged and is still that of a military band.

Barnstaple Concert Band now encompasses a training section (Barnstaple Training Band - BCTB) for players of all ages and evolution of the Band continues to uphold its traditions and duties while embracing the challenges and opportunities that live music and public performance now bring. The Band has built upon its early military repertoire with the addition of a wide range of musical genres and styles across the years, including popular modern pieces, film themes and contemporary pieces.
